The Living Wage is what someone needs to earn to be able to afford basic essentials. In 2015, the City of Vancouver committed to paying all of its employees and contract workers a Living Wage. This meant that hundreds of workers, including cleaners, maintenance workers and security guards, were guaranteed a wage that would let them live in Vancouver.

It was more than a policy. It was a statement of values: the people who keep Vancouver moving deserve to be able to live here.

The cost of living keeps going up in Vancouver, but in 2023 City Council voted to end the Living Wage Policy. In 2024, a motion to recertify as a living wage employer was rejected by the ABC majority council.

Now, on Wednesday, January 21st, a motion is coming to city council to bring back the living wage.
