Re-circulated by the New Westminster & District Labour Council

The provincial election has been called for October 24th. A majority BCNDP government will mean real improvements for working people and families in BC. Read the platform here: https://www.bcndp.ca/platform

Candidates need help to get elected! Join a campaign, take a sign, phone, deliver leaflets, donate, volunteer and VOTE! Ridings like Coquitlam-Burke Mountain and Richmond-Queensborough in our region were only lost by a handful of votes. Great MLAs in ridings like Maple Ridge-Pitt Meadows, Maple Ridge-Mission and Surrey Fleetwood are seeking re-election and being targeted by BC Liberals. You can make a difference. The full list of candidates and campaigns in our region is attached.

*Important note on mail in ballots from Elections BC*

Completed vote-by-mail packages must be received by Elections BC before 8 p.m. (Pacific time) on Saturday, October 24.

We recommend that you request a vote-by-mail package by October 17. After this date, voters will not be able to request a vote-by-mail package online or through our Contact Centre. If a voter is unable to vote in person, they will still be able to request a vote-by-mail package from a district electoral office, which they can complete and drop off at any voting place, district electoral office or a participating Service BC office. More information at https://elections.bc.ca/voting/how-to-vote-by-mail/

Mail in ballots requested before close of nominations (October 2) will be WRITE IN, where you will have to fill in the candidate name or party (DO NOT write the leaders name, unless you live in John’s riding!). More information here: https://elections.bc.ca/docs/VoteByMailInstructions.pdf

Rick Glumac is running for re-election for the BC NDP! For the last 3 years he has been the Parliamentary Secretary for Technology for the Province of BC and was recently elected Canadian Vice-President of the Pacific Northwest Economic Region.  He has been focused on growing the tech sector in this province.

Message from Rick:

Maybe donating is not something you normally do.

Here are some of the ideas I heard during my last term to help grow the tech sector and economy in general: we need more talent and investment in re-skilling; we need to create a better home ice advantage for procurement for new companies trying to find a first customer within government; and, we need a strategic investment fund.

Dear Sisters, Brothers & Friends,

During the holiday season, food banks across BC struggle to provide essential food, such as protein, to the growing number of vulnerable people who have lost jobs or work several low-paying jobs and are forced to turn to food banks to feed their families. This year, with Covid-19 it is even more challenging.

At the New Westminster & District Labour Council regular meeting in September delegates passed the following motion:

“MSC that the New Westminster & District Labour Council invite the delegates to make a donation at the October and November (this year December 2 due to BC Fed convention) meetings toward the purchase of Union Protein Project products for donation to Food Banks in our region and the NWDLC match the money raised to a maximum of $500.00.”

Individual delegates will be able to  mail cheques or make electronic funds transfers (EFTs) to the Labour Council as we will not be meeting in person to take donations and we will be accepting donations at our office until December 11th Local unions affiliated to the New Westminster & District Labour Council, can also participate in this solidarity purchase of a half pallet (60 cases) of UPP tuna, at a total cost of $1848, to be distributed to Food Banks in our region as part of our #LabourGives Giving Tuesday campaign. Giving together creates an affordable option for local unions wishing to support those in need this holiday season.

Most people know about Black Friday and Cyber Monday. Giving Tuesday is on December 1st this year and is a Canadian movement for giving and volunteering. LabourGives, a part of Giving Tuesday, is a celebration of solidarity supported by the Canadian Labour Congress and is for everyone in the labour movement who wants to give something back. More information can be found here: http://givingtuesday.ca/partners/labourgives
