KFA – Job Action Committee

Hello Kwantlen Faculty Association Members,

As we are in collective bargaining, it is prudent to prepare for the possibility that job action may be required for faculty to communicate resolve.  You are invited to participate in the formation of a Job Action Committee.  The role of this committee is to:

  • Plan strategic job action activities that may escalate over time such as:
  • information sessions, visual expressions of solidarity (e.g. placards, buttons, attire).
  • co-ordinated forms of work-to-rule (e.g. non-response to calls for committee membership, elections…).
  • forms of strike action (e.g. unavailable for meetings).
  • Establish communication infrastructure independent from KPU’s systems.
  • Conduct research and analysis.
  • Co-ordinate logistics of job action activities (e.g. who does what, when, where, with…)
  • Prepare member and community communications.
  • Liaise with faculty to permit job action to escalate effectively and responsibly as needed (please note that a strike vote is required in advance of any job action).

No prior experience is required.  The Job Action Committee will receive support from the KFA and training from the Federation of Post Secondary Educators.  The KFA has also liaised with the Kwantlen Student Association to communicate the potential impact of bargaining proposals on students and for job action.

The issues before faculty are serious and require a strong response.  These issues include:

  • Class size: we understand from faculty that thirty-five is the limit and any increase in class size is a step closer to the Employer’s proposal for seventy students.
  • Working Conditions: sufficient release time for administrative duties such as those performed by chairs and co-ordinators of academic units, and committee work performed by faculty.
  • Academic Governance: accountable time and professional development should be under the control of faculty to support educational quality and academic freedom.

If you are ready to contribute to the development and execution of our job action strategy, please use this link to communicate interest or reply to this e-mail for any additional information.

You are the KFA.

In solidarity,

Your Working Conditions Committee and KFA Table Officers
