Update on Pending Layoffs

Dear Colleagues,

This past Friday, the Employer confirmed for us that they have rejected each and every one of the consultation proposals we submitted to prevent their planned layoffs.

This week, 79 faculty members have been called to 6 group meetings on Tuesday and Wednesday, and  they each will receive a notice of layoff. In addition, four NR2 faculty members will be laid off. It is ironic that while in a recent message the Interim President urged faculty to respect their colleagues’ right to privacy around their employment situation, the Employer is not holding individual meetings to uphold that same right.

These layoffs impact faculty across a number of areas including ACP (English Upgrading and English Language Studies), Arts (a number of disciplines), Business (highest number of layoffs across a number of disciplines), and Science (a number of disciplines). Some of the disciplines are the same as were targeted for previous layoffs, and some are newly affected.

The KFA is taking all actions possible to avert as many of the layoffs as possible, and we will continue to speak truth to those with the power to stop these layoffs.

We will say again, clearly: These section and program cuts and the resulting layoffs to faculty are not necessary. They are a choice amongst a variety of different alternatives.

Please watch for an expanded communication with more detail on this topic, and other communications including ways you can help.

In solidarity,

Your KFA Officers:
