We Stand Together: Faculty Layoffs Are a Choice, Not a Necessity
Dear KFA Colleagues,
Yesterday, we received the devastating news that our institution has issued meeting invitations in regard to layoff notices to approximately 70 faculty members who have dedicated years of their lives to the success of KPU students and to our community. This is not just a potential loss of jobs; it is a loss of knowledge, succession, and stability in our academic community. We will do everything in our power to fight the actions of the Employer.
Many of you are feeling a mix of shock, anger, sadness, and uncertainty. Please know this: you are not alone. We will not allow this moment to pass without challenge.
The administration has framed these cuts as unavoidable. We know this is false. Their own budget choices—millions allocated to administrative expansion and temporary projects—prove that layoffs were not a necessity. They were a decision.
Right now, our focus must be twofold:
Supporting Our Colleagues. Those impacted need immediate solidarity and assistance navigating this process. The KFA is committed to ensuring every affected faculty member has guidance and advocacy in the days ahead.
Organizing Our Response. These layoffs impact all of us. They are a direct attack on faculty job security, academic integrity, and the stability of our university. The time to mobilize is now.
Our Faculty Action and Strategy Team is meeting tonight discuss next steps and a faculty town hall will be scheduled for next week. This is not the end of the fight—this is the beginning. Stay informed, stay connected, and stand together. Show up to the KPU Board meeting on March 26th. We are in the process of requesting a zoom link to the meeting and will keep faculty informed.
In solidarity,
Mark Diotte
President, Kwantlen Faculty Association
